The NWSL club plans to play at the 25,000-seat Etihad Park while continuing a separate 27,000-square-foot performance-center project in Morris County.
HARRISON, NJ – Gotham FC will make a new soccer stadium in Queens its home beginning in 2028, shifting the club’s long-term match base across the Hudson River while continuing plans for a dedicated training and performance center in Whippany.
The two-time and reigning National Women’s Soccer League champion announced the move Tuesday, July 7, with New York City FC. Gotham will play home matches at Etihad Park, a planned 25,000-seat stadium in Queens.
The move is a significant change for a club with deep New Jersey ties. Gotham’s 2026 schedule continues to include multiple home matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, although the club also uses other venues for some matches. Its published schedule lists Harrison dates alongside games at sites including Citi Field and Icahn Stadium.
Gotham said Etihad Park is scheduled to open in spring 2027, with New York City FC beginning play there in 2027 and Gotham following in 2028. The stadium is being developed as a soccer-specific venue and is also scheduled to host men’s and women’s Olympic soccer matches in 2028.
The shift in match venue does not mean Gotham is leaving New Jersey entirely. In its July 7 announcement, the club reiterated plans for its first dedicated training facility in Whippany, preserving a major operational connection to Morris County.
Gotham previously announced plans to transform its existing Whippany facility into an approximately 27,000-square-foot performance center. The club’s July announcement said that separate New Jersey project remains part of its plans.
For New Jersey supporters, the change creates a split geographic identity: the club’s permanent home-match venue is scheduled to move to Queens while its player-development and daily performance infrastructure remains in Morris County. That description follows directly from the two projects announced by the club; the long-term economic effects on Harrison or surrounding businesses have not yet been established.
Etihad Park is planned near the Mets-Willets Point transit hub, with access to the 7 subway line and Long Island Rail Road. Gotham and New York City FC said additional ticketing and seating details will be announced as the 2028 move approaches.
