Morristown’s First Winter Encampment, 1777

Pat Sanftner will examine Morristown’s first Revolutionary War winter encampment in a free lecture Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Morris County Library, 30 East Hanover Ave. in Whippany. Advance registration is required because space is limited, and a Zoom option is available.
The program focuses on the Continental Army’s 1777 stay after the victories at Trenton and Princeton. Topics include smallpox inoculations, construction of Fort Nonsense and George Washington’s residence at Arnold Tavern. Sanftner, America 250 state chair for the New Jersey Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will discuss the significance of this earlier Morristown encampment.
Morris County Historical Society and the Morris County Heritage Commission present the lecture as part of their yearlong 2026 series. Readers interested in local Revolutionary history can register through the link on the Historical Society’s event page. This calendar entry identifies the in-person library location; remote participants should follow the organizer’s Zoom registration instructions.
