Morris County officials recognized the family-run restaurant’s longevity as second-generation owner Allison Lloyd Porter carries forward the business founded by her parents in 1981.
MORRISTOWN, NJ — The Grand Café marked its 45th anniversary on July 1, 2026, as family members, longtime employees, patrons and public officials gathered in downtown Morristown to recognize the restaurant’s history and its transition to a new generation of family leadership.
The celebration took place exactly 45 years after Irish immigrants Desmond and Alice Lloyd opened the restaurant on July 1, 1981. Their daughter, Allison Lloyd Porter, now leads the family-operated business following the deaths of Desmond Lloyd in December 2025 and Alice Lloyd in February 2026.

Morris County Commissioner Director Stephen Shaw, joined by Deputy Director John Krickus and Commissioners Christine Myers, Thomas Mastrangelo, Tayfun Selen and Deborah Smith, presented Lloyd Porter with a commemorative plaque recognizing the anniversary and her parents’ legacy.
“Forty-five years is absolutely unbelievable,” said Director Shaw. “You and your family built a legacy here. Morristown was a different place 45 years ago. Eating habits have changed, dining habits have changed, but you adapted through those times. Your parents hit on a recipe for success. They really built a legacy.”
The event drew approximately 50 people and highlighted both the restaurant’s longevity in a changing downtown and the role of employees and patrons in sustaining the business over more than four decades.

Morris County Sheriff James Gannon also presented a plaque on behalf of Morris County Crime Stoppers alongside organization Chairman John Sette. Assemblywoman Aura Dunn and Chiara Garcia, chief of staff to state Sen. Anthony Bucco, presented a joint legislative citation on behalf of New Jersey’s 25th Legislative District. Morristown Fire Chief Bob Flanagan also attended and offered congratulations.
Among those present were Lloyd Porter’s husband, Michael, and their son; her brother, Desmond Lloyd Jr.; and longtime members of The Grand Café staff, including Executive Chef Quang and Maître d’ Walter Hansbury.
Lloyd Porter credited her parents, the community and generations of employees with building and sustaining the restaurant.
“The past 45 years were built by my parents and the community, but also the countless people who work tirelessly to serve you beautiful meals and give you exceptional service,” said Lloyd Porter. “I learned the most about taking care of people through my parents and their always wanting to do the right thing. Their passing was very sad for me, but it is a privilege to run their business, and an honor… We’ll continue to evolve so we can be here for another 45 years.”

Founded in 1981, The Grand Café has operated through decades of changes in Morristown’s downtown business district and dining industry. The restaurant has built its identity around fine dining and service while maintaining its status as a family-run establishment.
The anniversary also served as the start of a monthlong series of July promotions tied to the 45-year milestone. Those offerings include 45 percent off select wines, a $45 prix-fixe lunch menu featuring Grand Café selections and live piano performances on Saturday evenings.
The milestone places the restaurant’s current leadership at a transition point: preserving a business established by Desmond and Alice Lloyd while adapting its operations for a new generation of customers and continued service in downtown Morristown.
